Light Tackle Fishing

Topsail Island | Figure Eight | Wrightsville Beach | Carolina Beach | Bald Head | Southport | Oak Island
Nearshore Jack Crevalle Sightfish NC

The vast inshore marsh, bays, and creek systems offers us calm protected areas away from the wind and rough water.
This area provides excellent sight fishing opportunities year round for our favorite target, North Carolina’s state fish the Red Drum. Other seasonal inshore species we target are Speckled Trout, Tarpon, Flounder, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Tripletail, and Sharks.

While inshore fishing we typically use a variety of artificial lures or bait depending on time of year and type of species targeted to allow you the best chance at success.

Saltwater fly fishing is what drew captain Allen into the guiding business. Whether its redfish tailing on a flooded grass flat or belly crawling down a shoreline with their backs exposed, giant schools of false albacore blitzing through a group of baitfish on the surface, or large tarpon cruising down a shoreline, the North Carolina coast provides the fly angler many angling opportunities. Although redfish are the most popular fly fishing species, every fish that inhabits our inshore and nearshore waters can be caught on fly.

Saltwater fly fishing requires a patient guide and perfect boat handling skills to consistently position the angler in the best possible opportunity to cast to a fish. Captain Allen’s specialty is poling his skiff through a myriad of marsh systems while coaching his fly angler into the perfect fly presentation.

Capt. Allen also provides fly casting lessons as well custom tied flies.

Near Shore Fishing

False Albacore on Fly Sightfish NC

Nearshore is considered from the beach out to 10 miles in the ocean. We fish the inlets, jetty, and artificial wrecks/reefs depending on time of year and species targeted. These areas offer many species such as False Albacore, Tarpon, Cobia, adult Redfish, Mackerel, Bluefish, Atlantic Bonito, Sharks, Black SeaBass, Amberjacks, Flounder, and many others.

Most of these species can be caught on both fly fishing and light tackle spinning fishing tackle.

NC is a shark magnet in the summer and fall with dozens of species available depending on whether you are fishing inshore or nearshore. We target sharks everywhere from shallow flats in the marsh and rivers to the nearshore wrecks and reefs. Often times we will use chum to bring the sharks in close to the boat and then sightcast an artificial lure, bait, or baitfish fly to the sharks on the surface. This makes for an exciting scenario as you watch the shark inhale your presentation. When the ocean is calm we will run our boats out to fish behind shrimp trawlers. When the trawlers bring up their nets to cull their bycatch it creates a giant chum line that draws in sharks from all directions. This often makes for very easy shark fishing.

Most sharks we catch are 40-100lbs, but its not unusual to see sharks well over 300lbs right next to the boat. Some species such as blacktips and spinner sharks will jump and flip through the air giving the angler a show while fighting the fish.

Kids Fishing Trips

Topsail Island | Figure Eight | Wrightsville Beach | Carolina Beach | Bald Head | Southport | Oak Island
Kids Fishing Redfish Sightfish NC

We offer kids trips for the family that wants to get on the water for a few hours of easy, no pressure fishing. On kids trips we typically use live or dead bait to catch a variety of bottom species such as croaker, pinfish, black seabass, and many other easy to catch fish. Often times we will also put out a few bigger rods with larger baits to try and catch a redfish, flounder, shark, or larger species of fish while the kids enjoy catching a variety of bottom fish.
Most kids fishing trips are done in the protected inshore waters off the intracoastal waterway or near the inlets.

We offer 2 and 4 hour kids fishing trips, but all trips can be customized to meet your fishing preferences.

We offer Cast & Blast trips for those seeking a fishing and wingshooting adventure on the same day. Clapper Rails (Marsh Hens) are a webless migratory game bird found along our salt marshes. They are a sporty bird and offer a liberal bag limit of 15 per birds per hunter. With the right tides, we can combine any fall fishing trip for tailing redfish or other gamefish into a Cast & Blast trip. Please contact us for more info.

Rail hunting season: September-November.

With a large transom and high freeboard this boat handles rough water very well. It allows us to offer trips for larger groups of fishermen than the flats boat, and is a great boat for families with kids. It can carry up to 5 passengers, and allows us the flexibility to fish the inshore marsh, creeks, and inlets off the Intracoastal Waterway as well as fishing the nearshore wrecks and reefs out in the ocean.
